RE:
Committee opportunities and other announcements
The Colorado Wine Industry Development
Board met November 26-27, 2001 in Glenwood Springs to establish goals and
priorities for the 2003 fiscal year, which begins July 1, 2002. Improving
the quality and the public’s perception of the quality of Colorado wines
was identified as the number one priority of the CWIDB.
Three committees were formed to begin the process of planning programs and budgets for FY 2003: Research, headed by Steve Smith of Grande River Vineyards; Marketing, headed by Ken Theobald of Classic Wines in Denver; and Quality, headed by Bob Witham of Two Rivers Winery, who is also our new Wind Board chairperson. (Congratulations and thanks to Bob!)
Membership and service on these committees is open to anyone who would like to volunteer their time. The CWIDB is eager to get input from all elements of the wine industry as we plan for the upcoming fiscal year. If you have questions about the committees, their function or meetings, please contact the committee chairs or me. The first meetings are noted. Even if you can’t participate on a committee, we welcome your input and ideas.
Marketing: Thursday, January
10, 2002, 1-4 PM at Classic Wines, 445 Bryant St. Unit #8, Denver (exit
US 6 or 6th Ave. westbound on Bryant, go 1 block south)
Ken Theobald, chair: 303.825.1360

Quality: meeting TBA
Bob Witham, chair: 970.255.1471
Also, please note the "Great Deals" opportunity offered by the Colorado Tourism Office through www.colorado.com. If you are offering a holiday deal, discount or package, you can list that on www.colorado.com for free through February. I am attaching the information I received by e-mail last Friday. Please contact PRACO or the CTO with any questions about this offer. Since the wine industry is considered to be a "tourism related business," especially in light of the great success Grand Junction has had promoting that city as "Colorado’s Wine Country" and the positive impact that promotion has had on our entire industry state wide, your business is eligible for this promotion.
Finally, the CWIDB has voted to continue the consulting enologist program for another year, by making the services of a consultant available to any licensed winery at greatly reduced costs. Details of this program will be forthcoming in the next few weeks. It will most likely be nearly identical to last year’s program, allowing you to sign up for either 4 hours or 8 hours of consultation at $75 or $150 respectively.
To clear up some confusion, when Richard Bruno gave his seminar last June, he mentioned the sterile bottling facility that Canyon Wind has installed in the past year. It is a tremendous state-of-the-art facility to be sure, but it creates labeling issues when another winery brings wine to Canyon Wind to be bottled. Grande River has a portable bottling line that they have made available to other wineries for nearly 10 years now. Using a portable bottling line alleviates any labeling issues, since your wine would be bottled at your facility. Talk to Steve Smith or Kevin Sweeney at Grande River in Palisade for more information.
And speaking of Richard, he has sent me the final invoice for his consultation. If any of you who participated in his consultation last spring have not received your written reports, please let me know immediately! I won’t submit the invoice for payment until I am sure everyone has received their reports.
Last Call for wineries to participate in the Colorado Food and Wine Pairing Competition at the CO Restaurant Association’s trade show on January 29, 2002. While we will have a tasting for the show’s attendees in conjunction with this competition, you do not need to be present or participate in the "public" tasting in order to have your wines considered for the competition. So far, Canyon Wind, DeBeque Canyon, Trail Ridge, Cottonwood Cellars, Balistreri, Bookcliff and Redstone Meadery have agreed to participate. You will need to provide samples for the chefs to match and to pour for the judges during the competition.
Any wine you pour at the tasting for the "public" will be reimbursed by the CWIDB at the 50% of retail value or 25% off wholesale that we normally pay. We will be inviting key retailers to attend this tasting, as well.
Keep in mind that at many recent events, the CWIDB will also pay for the wine you poured at our normal rates: Taste the Seasons at Cortez, Confier Chamber Tasting in Bailey, Denver Bar Assoc. Young Lawyers Tasting, and so forth. If you have any questions about a promotional event at which you poured wine, please call me.
Thanks to all of you who have been
working so hard to promote Colorado wines! Have a wonderful holiday season.

Dear Doug:
Thanks for spreading the word.
One slight amendment to the requirements.
Wineries need not send 1 white and
1 red -- they can send any two wines
of their choice, as long as the wines
are from Colorado grown grapes, as
opposed to grapes brought in from outside
the state.
Should any one have any questions, they can always contact me directly.
Regards,
James Molesworth
