Hello Everyone,
From the wealth of Winefest information which Cheryl Collins
was kind enough to leave with me, I have found your names and email
addresses as part of a group of Winefest Volunteers from previous years.
We are going to need nearly 50 volunteers this year to cover one of
three shifts on Saturday, September 21st.
As Cheryl did last year, I am looking for volunteers to work the gates
and poster booth for this year's event.
Can we count on you again?
There will be three shifts (4 hours each) at the following times:
8:00 - 12:00
11:00 - 3:00
2:00 - 6:00
This year, if you volunteer for me for one of the shifts listed above,
you will receive:
2002 Winefest T-Shirt!
2002 Winefest Wine Glass!
Voucher for your lunch & plenty of water
to rehydrate!
Free admission to the event!
Please join us to help make this year's Colorado Mountain Winefest the
best yet!!!
Tell your friends, family & co-workers about this great volunteer
opportunity, and email, phone or drop me a line with the
names and contact information of anyone you know who would like to
help out, too.

Thank You to Peachfest Volunteers!
A big vote of thanks to the folks who volunteered at our Winefest booth
during Peachfest. They sold lots of tickets, posters, and T-shirts,
distributed Winefest brochures, and educated a lot of folks about the industry.
Thanks for all of your help!!

Check out the web page on the Western Grapeleaf Skeletonizer (WGS),
Harrisina brillians at
http://www.colostate.edu/Depts/CoopExt/TRA/PLANTS/westerngrapeleafskeletonizer.html.
This insect was recently collected in the vicinity of Montrose, Colorado.
Photographs of the larvae, adult and damage are included on the web page.
Please notify us if you have noticed these distinctive larvae on your grapes or other susceptible plants.

Above is a link to a copy of the recent
memo from the American
Vintners Assoc. Please note the request for information from growers
with significant, weather-related crop losses in 2001 and 2002. Since
the
current drought began with a very dry winter, many of you who had desiccation
damage may want to respond to Bill Nelson as indicated.
Also the news of the FTC's investigation into e-commerce of wine is
encouraging.

I am sure that all of your were just sitting in front of your computer
screen or staring at the mailbox, thinking that you didn't have enough
events on your calendar. You were probably wondering how to fill your
time
in the coming weeks--crush, bottling and find more tank space
notwithstanding.
Well, worry no more. I have many new opportunities for you to fill your
calendar to the max and beyond.
Saturday, Sept. 28 Noon-6 PM: Niwot's Clothesline Art and Food Festival.
No one that I heard from
wanted to go to Craig for their festival
scheduled on this date, so how about Niwot? Niwot is a lovely little
old
town between Boulder and Longmont, where all of the California immigrants
who couldn't find enough room to build their mansions in Boulder have
settled. This is a first annual arts festival that is advertising in
the
local newspapers and will no doubt draw from surrounding communities.
They would like to do a Colorado
wine tasting adjacent to their food
booths in the parking lot of Niwot Liquors. We need someone to license
this
as a wine festival. The art festival can provide volunteers to staff
the
wine tasting and I can train them as needed. You will only need to
provide
product for sampling and sale by the glass. We can sell bottles either
from
the license or through the liquor store next door. Time is short, so
please
contact me immediately if you want to license this event or just
want to
have your wine sampled.
Friday and Saturday, Oct 4-5, times TBA: Parking Lot Tasting at The
Wine
Experience, Broomfield.
The last parking lot event
done here over the Fourth of July weekend
sold more cases of Colorado wine than any other event outside of Palisade's
Wine Fest.
Owner/manager Dave Westfall
is very picky about the wines he selects
for his store, but obviously his customers trust him. If your wines
are not
in this store, please schedule an appointment to taste Dave (303.439.9463)
and his staff on your products. This parking lot tasting will undoubtedly
be
bigger than last time! Two Rivers is licensing this event.
Saturday, Oct 12, 1-5 PM: Parking Lot Tasting at Pyramid Liquors, Littleton.
This is another store that
is eager and motivated to sell Colorado
wines. James Sletten at Pyramid already carries CO Cellars, Plum Creek,
Carlson, Grande River and the Rocky Mountain Meadery. It would be wonderful
if one of these wineries would agree to pull a wine festival permit
for this
event.
If you want to get your wines
in Pyramid, please set up a tasting
for James (303.794.0101) ASAP so he can decide whether or not to bring
in
your products prior to the tasting.
Sunday-Monday, October 13-14: The Governor's Symposium on Colorado Cuisine,
The Broadmore Hotel.
I will be pouring samples
at the Sunday evening reception. We are
working on a Colorado Proud and Colorado Wine bistro where we can sample
all
day long, too. These samples will come from the CWIDB promotional stash.
The Colorado Chefs Association
will select some Colorado wines to
serve with their banquet on Monday night. They do have money to purchase
this wine, but are hoping for some special pricing from wineries. If
you
would like your products considered for this dinner, please let me
know. As
much as I can, I will facilitate the delivery of these wines to The
Broadmore.
Saturday, Oct 19, 6-9 PM: Arvada Elks Lodge Colorado Wine Festival.
The Arvada Elks are going
to temporarily unlicense their ballroom so
that we can pull a wine festival permit for this evening. You will
be able
to sell bottles and glasses. The Arvada Elks boast a membership of
2500 and
expect to draw at least 1500 for this event. Diana Read has agreed
to pull
the license. Please contact either Diana (970.323.6224) or myself if
you
wish to participate in this festival.
Wednesday-Friday, October 23-25: The Governor's Conference on Tourism,
Grand
Junction.
First, it is significant
that this conference will happen in Grand
Junction. I don't yet know how we will participate, but I am sure that
there
will be several opportunities for you to donate some wine or pour for
the
influential tourist industry leaders that will attend.
Secondly, if you haven't
heard...
the GJVCB just received
along with Hill & Co. an Odyssey award for
our 2002 domestic advertising campaign. This award is given by the
Travel
Industry of America (TIA) the national agency that hosts Pow Wow every
year.
They only give out ten each year and only one award in each category.
This
is like receiving an "Oscar" in the Travel Industry for 'Best picture'...
(Deb Kovalik).
Congratulations to both the
GJ VCB and to Hill and Company for
creating the "Adventure You Can Taste" campaign. And even though the
Colorado wine industry spreads way beyond the walls of the Grand Valley,
every time this campaign got someone to think about wine in Colorado,
our
industry as a whole benefited. (Go to
http://www.tia.org/Press/pressrec.asp?Item=200
for more information on the
award.)
I know you simply can't do each and every event. I truly appreciate
the
amount of effort and time you devote to promoting our industry at all
of
these events. Everything you do makes a difference. Thank you!
The CWIDB will be organizing the samples of Colorado wine to be poured
at
the Unified Wine and Grape Symposium in Sacramento in January of 2003.
I
will be asking for 3-4 bottles of one kind of wine from wineries that
wish
to have their product poured at this great event. Please let me know
if you
are interested, and offer a few choices for the wine you would like
poured
there.
The 3-bottle carriers will be available by Wine Fest on September 21.
They
will be delivered to Canyon Wind in Palisade--thanks to Norm and Ben
for
loaning us the space--early the week of Sept. 16. I will contact you
with
details about picking up your orders when the boxes arrive. I still
do not
know exactly how many boxes will be packed in a case, so you order
may be
slightly more or less than you requested, depending on the packing.
Again thanks for all of your hard work at this time of year. I hope
all goes
well with crush.
