We have just been asked to participate in the annual Denver Taste of
the Nation event scheduled for July 28, 2002 at Johnson & Wales University.
Due to the CWIDB’s new promotional wine purchasing policy, we are looking
for wineries to participate on an individual basis. This year each
winery will be paired with a restaurant and is asked to donate two different
wines (one case of each) to match the food being served.
Attached is further information regarding the event, including a winery
participation form. If interested, please email or fax the completed
participation form to Terri Miller at terrygmill@aol.com
or 303-452-0036 (fax), or contact her with any further questions.
Also, we are still looking for several more wineries to donate wine
for the National Conference of State Legislatures scheduled for July 24,
2002. Please note that you would not have to be present for this
event. I will be on the Western Slope sometime during the week of
July 15th if you would like me to pick up wine for this event.
The Craig Memorial Hospital and Arvada Elks Lodge Colorado Wine Tastings
are both quickly approaching (scheduled for Saturday September 28th and
either Saturday October 12th or 19th, respectively). Please contact
me as soon as possible if you are interested in participating at either
of these events so that we can begin the planning process.
Direct Shipment and State Legislators

Below is a message from Ron Binz, co-owner of Trail Ridge Winery in
Loveland, former CO Wine Board chair, and current officer of the American
Vintners Association.
Doug Caskey, executive director
Colorado Wine Industry Development Board
Dear Colorado Wine Colleague,
I'm writing to ask if you'd consider helping out on the direct wine
shipment
issue with the American Vintners Association (AVA) and the advocacy
organization Free the Grapes!
During the third week July, the National Conference of State Legislators
(NCSL) is holding its annual meeting in Denver. As part of the
meeting,
Free the Grapes! is hosting an information booth to meet with legislators
and talk about direct shipment laws. In past years, there
has been a lot
of interest in the issue among legislators at the NCSL meeting.
As you may know, I am a board member of the AVA, an organization with
a
strong interest in liberalizing the wine shipment laws. AVA and
Free the
Grapes think it will be very effective to have actual wineries there
to tell
lawmakers how important the issue is to our industry. It will
be easy
work--just explaining how direct shipment can work, what consumers
want, and
what it would mean to your business. Mainly we want to put a
face on the
concept of a small winery.
Please let me know if you can join me and others at the booth for a
couple
hours on Thursday and Friday, July 25-26. The meeting is at the
Adams Mark
Hotel in downtown Denver. I'll need to know in advance if you
can help out
so I can schedule folks and arrange to have a floor pass for your use.
(AVA
will pay for the cost of the floor pass.)
Thanks for considering this. Please call (303-393-1556) or email
mailto:rbinz@rbinz.com if you
need more information.
Have a great Fourth of July.
Ron Binz
